In the hills above Santa Cruz, on a ridge overlooking Monterey Bay, Alister MacKenzie built a course that he later considered among the finest he had ever designed. MacKenzie had just finished Augusta National. He had recently completed our Cypress Point golf print on the Monterey Peninsula less than thirty miles away. And he chose to spend the last years of his life living on the edge of this fairway. This minimalist Pasatiempo golf print captures the quality that earned that devotion: the natural canyons MacKenzie used instead of reshaping, the strategic options his layouts always offered, and the Santa Cruz hillside light that changes what the course looks like on every visit.

About this golf destination

Golf has been played at Pasatiempo since 1929. The course opened the same year MacKenzie completed his other California commission at the Monterey Peninsula, and the two layouts share the same philosophy: use what the land gives you, reward imagination over power, and design holes that look different to every golfer standing on the same tee. MacKenzie described Pasatiempo as one of his favourites, a statement that carries weight when the same man designed Augusta National.
